Freshman Students will need to take a virtual class as part of the High School Graduation Requirements.

What is the earliest that students can take the virtual class that is required for graduation? Typically, students in 8th grade are good candidates to take an online / virtual course for high school credit.  It really depends on the student's readiness for high school curriculum.  I suggest that parents engage the student's guidance counselor in the conversation.  Ultimately, the guidance counselor must approve the course request prior to the student starting a course.  The summer is a great time to take a half-credit course such as Journalism or Critical Thinking Skills.

What is the min. credit required for graduation- 1/2 credit or 1 full credit.   The statute requires one "course" to be taken online.  It can be a half or full-credit course.  This has been confirmed by the FDOE.

How much in advance do you recommend that the students register.   As far in advance as possible. I recommend that 9th grade students register for courses now with Florida Virtual School (with consultation with the guidance counselor).  Students can choose their preferred start time, so they can register now and start the course later in the year.  Students can register online at the following site:

What classes fulfill this requirement?  Any high school course that awards credit is acceptable.  A complete list of Florida Virtual Courses can be found online at the following site:
