An Overview
I. The Project
A Real-World Connection, Application and/or Product
The Environmental Science and Everglades Restoration Magnet Program expects its students to connect their studies and interests with the local, national and international communities.
As students are preparing their Senior Projects, they are required to go beyond the classroom in order to learn and demonstrate a new skill with environmental significance. Later, these efforts will fill their Reflective/Analytical papers with the "real-world" applicability. The project itself should stretch beyond the usual subject/skill learning required in high school. It should be a challenge to complete, it should produce something that does not already exist, and it should benefit others as well as the student doing the work.
II. A Documentary Portfolio
Students must compile all of their written work into a comprehensive portfolio that demonstrates skill in writing and a keen eye toward professional appearance.
III. Reflective/Analytical Paper
Students must construct a well-written paper that meets the formal standards (CBE or MLA) formatting, minimum of three full pages.
IV. Project Presentation (In-Class and Symposium)
The presentation is an opportunity for students to inform others about their projects. Students are expected to explain and demonstrate what they learned through completing the project, as well as to show that the project has been completed.
V. Senior Symposium
Seniors will be required to showcase their completed projects during the senior symposium. Students must prepare a display and remain present to answer questions throughout the time period. In the past, judges and other students have been greatly inspired by the interest that students have expressed in their projects.
